Things I remember when I was young - Some childhood memoirs.

I read a thread about the 90s in Singapore, and I decided to come up with a list of things that I remember from my childhood. Im sure you can identify some of them. I had fun looking up threads for ideas and pix, and I hope you have as much fun reading this post as well.

TV shows:
These are my favourite TV Shows when I was young and Im sure some of yaw will find them familiar.

1. Sailormoon

One day, Usagi Tsukino, clumsy 2nd-year middle school student (8th grader), stumbles upon a talking cat named Luna. Luna tells her that she is destined to be Sailor Moon, "champion of love and justice", and she must search for the fabled Moon Princess. Usagi finds friends that turn out to be destined senshi as well, and together they fight to save the world from the certain doom brought upon by the Dark Kingdom (Queen Beryl, the generals, Metallia).

Sailor moon used to be a part of my daily life..
But it's no longer air now, I guess I would even have difficulty to buy their VCDs and dolls too.
I rlly dont mind if I'm told I am the SailorMoon who needs to fight against the dark kingdom, srsly LOL.

2. Power Rangers

When I was young, my brothie and I used to pretend we were one of the rangers and hop around screaming and whacking each other. Tomboyish I know. And oh, not forgetting with my neighbours too lol. My favourite was the pink ranger and white ranger. Dont chu think the white ranger is like the hottest over there? Though he was always with his helmet.

3. Most of the kids (me included) would wake up especially at 10am every Saturday and Sunday to watch Pokemon and Powerpuff shows on Kids Central.

And it will always be the one of the hottest topic of discussion the next day when school started. Pokemon with guys whereas Powerpuff topic with girls.

Still remember Team Rocket ?

I still remembered my brothie and I would always hum along the Pokemon Theme song and try to memorize the lyrics even though we had to memorize our English spellings for our next day's school.

The very first version of Pokemon's Theme Song hahahaha

Can you able to name 100 pokemons before you go to bed?

&Not forgetting the Powerpuff girls too!

The Powerpuff Girls revolves around the adventures of Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles ; with the girls using their powers to defend their town- City of Townsville from villains and giant monsters. And especially their biggest rival Chimpanzee's lookalike - Mojo Jojo!

My favourite is still Bubbles heh.

4. Monday blues were made slightly better because of 搞笑行动. There was 梁婆婆, 梁细妹 and “真的是伤脑筋”.

I used to like watching it until it got lamer... and lamer.. and lamer..

5. 城人杂志 was hosted by 王禄江,钟琴,黄素芳,欧菁仙.
There was Miss Tan and 阿好好介绍.

I liked 欧菁仙- 阿好 last time. We loved to imitate them, saying “我–什么–都会”and "阿好好介绍" with the mouth and handsign. Sadly, I couldn’t find any pictures of the show or its characters.

6. Everyone also knew Aaron Kwok and his awesome song with the awesome trademark hand action and the awesome phrase “对你爱爱爱不完”.

He made every boy want a centre-parting I think.

Transport:
Some of the SBS buses used to be non-airconditioned and the seats were made of wood and the cushion was red.

I used to like pushing the windows damn wide and feel the wind on my face. But it was horrible when it rained, becos I had to shut the windows and the bus would become really humid and warm.

And Farecards!

Every bus came equipped with this farecard validator and we had to insert our card at the top, press the fare we are paying then the validator would make lots of weird noises before our card came out with a ticket from the bottom. But usually I'd always get free entry becos I was real young back then, that's what my mum told me how the past farecard validator works ;)

Food:
Being a child was just about schooling, eating, playing, sleeping, and eating some more. You could be able to buy a dope of junk food with $2 then.

1. The rainbow- coloured Paddle pops, who could forget those ?

It was only 50 cents each by then..

2. Ring pops and Push pops.

Push pops were the best because you could eat a bit and pocket it for the later.

I still remembered there was a guy jokingly asking me to marry him in the future with the ring pop.
That's sweet huh, I dont even know how he is he doing now anyway, as we have not been kept in touch since then LOL

3. There was this sweet which was a lollipop but came with some crystals in the packet. You would dip the lollipop in the crystals, and let pop and spark all over your mouth.

4. After a tiring session of block catching, getting your hands on an ice pop at the grocery store/ mama shop for 10 cents each was heavenly.

They were just frozen ice with colourings actually, but still tasted good. Fairprice still sells them, but I dont see anyone eating it now.

6. Itchy mouth? Nibble on these.

I called these as my childhood biscuits !

Techology:
1. Almost every working adult has a pager.
My dad had three by then.

2. There's no MSN, Windows live messenger by then, we chatted through MIRC/ ICQ instead or letters.

3. Everything you wished to transfer must be below 1.44MB, otherwise it wouldnt fit into these things called Floppy Diskettes.

Games &Leisure:
We were in the pre-Facebook and post-Marbles era. There was so much fun things indoors and outdoors, away from the computer too.

1. If you're with a bunch of friends, feeling bored, never fear, becos there's block-catching!

Don't try this now, the people who be will be doing any catching is the guys from the town council instead of your catcher friends.

2. After version of catching was "Ice-and-water".

If anyone was caught by the "catcher", they wont become the catcher, but be "frozen" instead, and had to stand on the spot without moving. Then other people would try to come and "unfreeze" you by touching, without being frozen by the "catcher" themselves. I still remembered I seldom get caught by then, I was good at running and ama fast runner too. But if you ask me to play this game now, I think I will ask you to count me out. I have no stamina to run now. Even crossing a overhead bridge, I can pant like crazy.

3. Adults carried pagers. We carried beeping devices too, which's known as Tamagotchi.

4. Most playgrounds were filled with SAND, not rubber.

Yes, playgrounds were awesome then. I could spend hours there playing for free. My favourite was the swing because I loved feeling the wind on my face. Most swings were made of really huge black tyres or something like that.

And the sand was great for making sandcastles, without going to the beach. Kids would bring their own spades and shovels down to play. But after that parents became concerned about the hygiene of sand at the playgrounds. Today, only very little of such playgrounds exist..

5. Who can forget the Bookworm Gang?

Every year the Bookworm company would come down to my school to sell books and coerce us into joining the "Bookworm club". And everytime the Bookworm auntie will read us a story from the latest Bookworm book series. But she won't tell us the ending, and asked us to buy it. GOOD @doing biz!

Online games:
Every student was working part-time. After school, they tended to their shop in
Neopets.

Who could forget this online game- Neopets? Neopets took the world by storm.
My favourite Neopet was Usuki, rabbits' look alike and it was creatively named Cutieprincess68 HAHAHAHA Cutie omg. I wonder if it's still alive now.

Mapleseas.

Don't understimate me, I used to own an account in Mapleseas. And my Ice mage character is at her Level 58/ 59, I used to spend hundreds on mapleseas just to buy their maplecash or something from 7 eleven, just becus I want my character to look prettier. Now, when I think back, that is seriously a waste of my money, I'd rather I make myself look prettier with the few hundreds I used to spend on my maple character urgh.

Fyi, I even had Habbo and Auditionseas account back then, at lest 4 to 5 years ago :B

School:
And talking about school.. it took up a large part of our time every day, it was horrible and fun at the same time, because everyone went through pretty much the same things. I'm sure there's a lot of to reminisce about !

1. For some time, trolley-schoolbags were the in-thing.

Until you realised your classroom was on the 4th floor.

2. It was called the tuckshop, not canteen.

And it was called Recess time, not break too.

3. Whenever teachers were not around*
Class monitors liked to say, “You talk some more, I write your name on the board ah!”

So what could my classmate and I do, were to throw letters around instead.

4. English was fun because of PETS coursebooks.

There was a different animal each year if you ever notice. I still remembered the animals were: Squirrel, Rat, Tortise, Rabbit, Bird and Monkey, from P1-P6.
After I bought my new textbooks during the holidays, the first book I would read was always PETS coursebook.

It's a pity I threw all the books away, else I can share in my blog.
Anyway back to PETS Coursebook, the worksheets were weird. They were held together using some poor quality gum, such that when you tore out many pages of worksheets at once, large chunks of gum were left on the worksheets :/

5. Everyone played the music recorder during music lessons.

This lesson is my favourite! But not bringing your recorder on Music lesson day was like the end of the world, totally, becos you either had to borrow from the next class (FYL if you did)
or you stand outside of the class throughout the whole lesson and got a cold stare from your Music Teacher.

6. The most vulgar thing we said was "idoit" when we were in primary school.

Yeah.. well.. not really true though. Becos my friends would always lure me to scold vulgarities.
What is white in chinese? 白
Very white in chinese? 很白
How about super white in chinese? 超级白

And when you said this, everyone will start to " orh hor " you.
Naize.

7. You brought every single book to school, even though there was one thing called the timetable, written on the inside cover of a little blue notebook.

Also, it was cool to bring colourful "book bands", basically a strip of velcro that you wrap around a few books and carry in your hand.

8. We would always hang our waterbottles around our shoulder everywhere we go.

The colourful thing which you can clipped on a new waterbottle, I forgot what's that called. But I still remembered it was sold at 60cents each back then.

9. Were you a Young Zoologist/Botanist?

It was a totally honour if you own one of the badges.

10. You never got bored of going to Science Centre.

11. Every of the Primary Fives had to play buddy for the Primary Ones .

12. You freak out when your teacher told you to line up two rows according to height and gender, then hold hands with the boy/girl beside you before walking off to the music room/computer lab/hall.

And I still remembered because of this interaction, I had a 6 years crush on my partner since I was primary one. Hahahaha whatever, those were the days.

13. The bookshop was always filled with people. To buy fanciful notebooks, erasers, rulers, pencils, everything except books. It was cool to collect those stuffs.

14. Talking about fanciful stationaries, there was those fanciful magnetic pencilboxes. At the push of some buttons you can have your sharpeners or even tiny drawers for your erasers.

Basically anything you probably don't need for school could be found inside.

15. Shaker was the coolest mechanical pencil in primary school. You were cool if you had one, becos most people were using 2B pencils.

16. Teacher's Day was the day which we all did our best to show our love for our teachers, by making cards, gifts and etc. We would flock to the staff rooms and hand it to them personally or leave it on their staff table.

Children's day was awesome because it would be the other way round. We actually came to expect teachers to give us something, included sweets, chocolates etc. It was the only day we could eat in class. We would also compare to see which teacher gave the 'best' presents.

17. Every primary school was a cemetry/graveyard before they were built .

Ghost stories of primary schools were always the same.

18. The telephone was our only source of communication after school. Which meant we could memorise the phone numbers of all our best friends.

I enjoyed chatting for hours with friends on the phone, only to get scolded by my parents later lol.

19. Teachers would paste coloured duct tapes around the corner of your workbook and that would be your group color for that term.

20. We exchanged diary book to each other to fill in our particulars, included our favourite singers, our favourite food and all.

Rule : Must use colour pens!
And the book will loaded with "Friends Forever" and little poems like " I have a pen, my pen is blue. I have a friend, my friend is you".

HAHAHAHAHHA.

Does it rhymes anyway ?
